Sunday of the Blind Man

May 17, 2026 - Grave Blessings to follow the service!

A lesson in learning to see.

Sometimes we imagine blindness as the absence of sight.

But in this Gospel, the deeper blindness belongs to those who refuse to recognize God standing in front of them.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Christ meets a man born blind and does something unexpected: He kneels in the dust, makes clay, and sends him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. The healing comes through trust, obedience, and encounter. The man receives not only physical sight, but the courage to confess: “Lord, I believe.”

Meanwhile, those who believed themselves spiritually certain struggled to see the work of God unfolding before them.

 Epistle: Acts 16:16–34

Paul and Silas sing hymns from prison at midnight, and even in chains, the light of Christ reaches others. An earthquake shakes the prison doors open, but the greater miracle is the conversion of the jailer’s heart.

 Gospel: John 9:1–38

Christ heals the man born blind, revealing that God’s glory is not found in blame or condemnation, but in restoration, mercy, and illumination.

The Church does not gather because we have everything figured out.

We gather because, like the blind man, we are learning to see.

All are welcome. Come and see.
