A lesson in stewardship, not ownership: what God places in our hands is meant to bear fruit.

This Sunday, St. Paul gives the Church a remarkably simple rule for a faithful life:

Be watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.

And in the Gospel, Christ tells of a vineyard carefully planted and entrusted to tenants. The vineyard was never theirs to possess. It was theirs to tend, to cultivate, and in its season, to return its fruit to the One who planted it.

It is an uncomfortable parable because the vineyard is not so far away.

Our time.

Our gifts.

Our families.

Our parish.

The people God places before us.

Even the faith we have received.

None of these are simply possessions. They are gifts entrusted to our care.

And St. Paul tells us how to tend them: stand firm, serve faithfully, and let everything be done in love.
