Sunday, September 13 | Sunday Before the Holy Cross

A lesson in the Cross as the measure of God’s love.

 Galatians 6:11–18

St. Paul strips away every other claim to glory:

“God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Cross changes not only what we believe, but who we are. In Christ, St. Paul tells us, there is “a new creation.”

 John 3:13–17

Christ speaks to Nicodemus of what is to come: the Son of Man will be lifted up.

And then come the words that reveal why:

God so loved the world.

The Cross is not the story of a God who has abandoned the world. It is the revelation of the God who loves it enough to enter our suffering, descend into death, and raise us into life.

On the eve of the great Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, the Church turns our eyes toward the Cross and asks us to see it anew: not simply as an instrument of suffering, but as the throne of the King, the sign of His victory, and the measure of His love.
